What are "Bioidentical" Hormones?
Bio-Identical hormones are derived from the wild yam or soybeans, however this is not the reason they are called "natural".  Bio-Identical hormones are hormones that are chemically altered in order to achieve the exact chemical structure as those hormones normally produced in a woman's body.  Bio-identical hormones are the identical duplication of the native hormones (Estriol, Estradiol, Estrone, Progesterone, Testosterone, and DHEA) found in the female body. Since the natural hormones are bio-identical, they are not herbs as some people believe, but rather are naturally occurring steroid hormones that have the same physiological effect on the female body.  Bio-identical hormones cannot be patented because they are found in nature.

What dosage forms are available for Bio-Identical hormones?

Dosing is patient specific.  Since Bio-Identical hormones are compounded by compounding pharmacists, each dose can be compounded to each persons specific needs, whereas synthetic hormones (i.e. Conjugated estrogens and medroxyprogesterone) are limited to a few doses.

One of the biggest assets to Bio-Identical hormone replacement is that the compounding pharmacist can compound a variety of dosage forms including:

Sustained release capsules
Creams
Troches
